Summer (June–August): Do not fertilise cool-season grass. Applying nitrogen during heat stress pushes growth the plant cannot sustain, weakens the root system, and increases disease pressure. This is the most common fertilisation mistake in Zone 5–7 lawns.

Warm-Season Grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine, Centipede)

The most important fertilisation rule is never exceed 1.0 lb of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft in a single application. Exceeding this causes fertiliser burn — the salt concentration in the fertiliser draws moisture out of grass cells, causing brown streaks or patches.

Fertiliser and Irrigation: How to Coordinate

Fertiliser and irrigation interact in two important ways:

Watering in after application

After applying granular fertiliser, water the lawn immediately — enough to wet the granules and move them off the blades and into the soil (approximately 0.25 inches of water). This prevents:

  • Blade burn from fertiliser sitting on wet grass in sun
  • Fertiliser volatilisation (nitrogen loss as ammonia gas, especially with urea)
